Pioneer Fellowship in Plant Sciences

The Pioneer Fellowship promotes doctoral level graduate education in the area of plant sciences, with specific focus on crop management, crop physiology, and other related areas. The intention of the Fellowship is to attract the highest quality students whose careers will continue to advance the science of crop management, physiology, or a related area within plant science. Funds for the Fellowship are made available from Pioneer Hi-Bred, International, Inc. to the Agronomic Science Foundation and administered by the Crop Science Society of America. The Fellowship provides a $25,000 annual stipend to a student for up to four years to be applied toward degree completion. The recipient also receives a membership to the Crop Science Society of America( CSSA) and a subscription to the Crop Science journal during the duration of the Fellowship.

Eligibility
The applicants must adhere to the following eligibility requirements.
  1. Must have applied to become a doctoral candidate in plant sciences with specific focus on crop management, crop physiology, and other related areas.
  2. Must submit proof of graduate school acceptance in plant science before receiving the Fellowship.
  3. Must have a major professor whose primary area of research is in crop management, crop physiology, or related areas and such professor is willing to submit an annual progress report to CSSA and Pioneer before subsequent year payments can be authorized.
  4. Must study full time and maintain at least an average of 3.5 grade point out of a possible 4.0.
  5. Must demonstrate progress in pursuit of stated academic and research goals.
  6. Must be willing to present a yearly report to Pioneer to describe his/her area of research and at the completion of the Fellowship may be asked to present and discuss the project.
  7. Must provide CSSA a projected graduation date one year prior to graduation.
  8. If, subsequent to the award, the Fellow changes academic program, education institution, or elects not to pursue the originally requested academic goal, then all remaining authorized funding is null and void. Any remaining issued funds shall be returned to CSSA and previously authorized funds will not be issued.

Provide contact information for three individuals who will submit online reference letters. One of the letters must be submitted by the doctoral graduate advisor indicating that nominee was accepted into graduate school and in the plant sciences. Note: Monitor these three letters online under "Nominations" as you will need to log in and submit the completed nomination containing the three reference letters.

Nominee Qualifications:

  1. Current School
  2. Department Name
  3. Letter of Interest
    Provide a letter of interest that includes identifying the activity the recipient will pursue, including location, brief description, activity dates, and the cost of travel expenses between the applicant's home base and the scholarship experience site. (Character Limit: 3000)
  4. Resume
    Provide a resume that includes major, year in school, and cumulative grade point average. (Character Limit: 6000)
  5. Academic Experience
    What has been your most beneficial academic experience pursuing your undergraduate degree? (Character Limit: 1500)
  6. Graduate School and Department
  7. Graduate Advisor
    Provide the name and email address of graduate advisor. (Character Limit: 100)
  8. Doctoral Program
    Describe the type of doctoral program you would like to pursue. Note: consideration is given to major crops such as corn, soybeans, canola, wheat and alfalfa. (Character Limit: 3000)
  9. Future Plans
    Briefly describe your future plans, telling how you can benefit plant sciences, focusing on crop management, crop physiology, or other related areas. (Character Limit: 3000)

Add References To Nomination

Provide contact information (name, full mailing address, phone, and email) for three individuals who will submit online reference letters.
