Fred V. Grau Turfgrass Science Award

This award is presented in recognition of significant career contributions in turfgrass science during the most recent 15 years. The award consists of a certificate and $1000 honorarium.


  1. Nominators are required to be members of ASA, CSSA, and/or SSSA.
  2. Nominees are required to be members of ASA, CSSA, and/or SSSA.
  3. Nominees must be living at the time of their nomination.
  4. Teams are not eligible to be nominated.
  5. Nominations are to be based on the most recent 15 years of the nominee's career (i.e., 1997 to 2012).

  1. Significance and originality of basic and/or applied research.
  2. Teaching ability and effectiveness.
  3. Planning and implementation of extension programs.
  4. Development and implementation of significant industrial programs.
  5. Administrative ability and effectiveness.
  6. Total impact of contributions on turfgrass science, nationally and internationally.

    List and evaluation of basic and/or applied research activities to include development of improved cultivars, techniques, processes, practices, and/or products. Also, list other related research activities. (Character Limit: 4500)
  7. Professional Contributions
    Describe the nominee's technical or nontechnical publications, patents, and efforts to develop or improve programs, practices, and products. List up to 12 of the most significant professional contributions of the nominee. (Character Limit: 4500)
  8. Service and Extension-type Contributions
    List service and extension-type contributions (Character Limit: 3000)
  9. Administrative Contributions
    List administrative contributions. (Character Limit: 1500)
  10. Contributions to the Profession
    List contributions other than service to the profession. (Character Limit: 3000)
  11. Teaching Contributions
    List (a) courses taught, dates, and approximate enrollments; (b) an evaluation of teaching effectiveness and teaching contributions; and (c) approximate number of students trained. (Character Limit: 3000)

    Identify in this section the primary contributions on which the nomination is based. Contributions on which the nomination is based must have been made within the most 15 years of the nominee’s career. (Character Limit: 3000)
